Poland scrambles jets as Russia strikes western Ukraine
Russia pounded Ukraine with missile and drone attacks overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, focusing on the major western city of Lviv. Ukraine's neighbour Poland scrambled fighter jets in order to ensure the safety of Polish airspace, the Polish military confirmed. Allied Nato aircraft were also deployed. Lviv's regional head Maksym Kozytskyi said two people were killed in strikes in the region, and two more injured. Elsewhere, Russia again targeted Ukraine's power plants - and one was struck in an overnight attack on Zaporizhzhia, where the mayor said one person died and more than 73,000 people were without electricity.

Ukraine's 'Spiderweb' drone assault forces Russia to shelter, move aircraft
Russia's increased sense of vulnerability may be the most important result of a recent large-scale Ukrainian drone attack named Operation Spiderweb, experts tell Al Jazeera. The operation destroyed as much as a third of Russia's strategic bomber fleet on the tarmac of four airfields deep inside Russia on June 1. Days later, Russia started to build shelters for its bombers and relocate them. An open source intelligence (OSINT) researcher nicknamed Def Mon posted time-lapse satellite photographs on social media showing major excavations at the Kirovskoe airfield in annexed Crimea as well as in Sevastopol, Gvardiyskoye and Saki, where Russia was constructing shelters for military aircraft. They reported similar work at several airbases in Russia, including the Engels base, which was targeted in Ukraine's attacks on June 1.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,199
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia had "responded" to Kyiv's audacious drone attack that destroyed Russian heavy bombers at airfields in Siberia last weekend by attacking civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. Russia's Ministry of Defence said its forces had carried out the strikes, which targeted military and military-related targets in response to what it called Ukrainian "terrorist acts" against Russia. Western military aviation experts told the Reuters news agency that Russia will take years to replace the nuclear-capable bomber planes that were hit in Ukrainian drone strikes on airfields in Siberia. Russia's National Guard said it killed a man as he tried to prepare a drone attack on a military site in Russia's Ryazan region, southeast of Moscow. Russian air defence units intercepted and destroyed 82 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory, including the Moscow region, Russia's Defence Ministry said early on Saturday.

Ukraine's 'Spider's Web' drone strike burns over 40 Russian warplanes, Moscow calls it 'terrorist attack'
Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy questions President Donald Trump about the Russia-Ukraine war. The brazen Ukrainian blitz of Russian warplanes Sunday was 18 months in the making and the Pentagon was kept in the dark until it was over, sources told Fox News. "Operation Spider's Web," a series of coordinated drone strikes penetrating deep into Russian territory, is believed to have taken out dozens of Russia's most powerful bomber jets and surveillance planes as they sat idle on five military airfields. The stunning operation was personally overseen by President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's security service (SBU) said. Ukraine used small FPV drones hidden inside wooden cabins mounted on trucks.

Ukraine drones strike 40 bombers during major attack in Russia
Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported a massive overnight drone and missile attack on its territory. All this comes as Russian and Ukrainian negotiators are heading to Istanbul, Turkey, for a second round of peace talks on Monday. Expectations are low, as the two warring sides remain far apart on how to end the war. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory, including the southern Crimea peninsula annexed in 2014.

Ukraine destroys dozens of Russian warplanes with drone attack deep inside Russia
Ukrainian forces destroyed dozens of Russian warplanes with a drone attack on air bases deep within Russian territory on Sunday. Ukrainian forces destroyed 40 aircraft in the attack, which an official says took more than a year to orchestrate. Russia's defense ministry confirmed the attack on Sunday, saying it struck five airfields. The operation saw drones transported in containers carried by trucks deep into Russian territory, he said. The drones reportedly hit 41 planes stationed at several airfields on Sunday afternoon, including A-50, Tu-95 and Tu-22M aircraft, the official said.

What are Germany's Taurus missiles that Ukraine wants?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held talks with Germany's Friedrich Merz in Berlin, days after the newly installed chancellor said Kyiv's Western allies had lifted range restrictions on their missiles and would allow Ukraine to use them to strike deep inside Russian territory. Merz made the announcement on Monday as Russia carried out heavy aerial bombardments on Ukraine and both sides launched tit-for-tat drone attacks. That comment sparked hope in Kyiv and put renewed attention on the possibility of Germany supplying Ukraine with Taurus missiles, which the war-wracked country has long requested. However, Merz, in a joint appearance with Zelenskyy on Wednesday, promised the Ukrainian leader that Germany would help his country develop long-range missiles on its territory. He did not make any commitments regarding the Taurus.

Drone war, ground offensive continue despite new Russia-Ukraine peace push
Russia and Ukraine have launched a wave of drone attacks against each other overnight, even as Moscow claimed it was finalising a peace proposal to end the war. Ukrainian air force officials said on Tuesday that Russia deployed 60 drones across multiple regions through the night, injuring 10 people. Kyiv's air defences intercepted 43 of them – 35 were shot down while eight were diverted using electronic warfare systems. In Dnipropetrovsk, central Ukraine, Governor Serhiy Lysak reported damage to residential properties and an agricultural site after Russian drones led to fires during the night. In Kherson, a southern city frequently hit by Russian strikes, a drone attack on Tuesday morning wounded a 59-year-old man and six municipal workers, officials said.

Ukraine gets green light to use US long-range missiles: What's next?
United States President Joe Biden has reportedly lifted restrictions on Kyiv on the use of long-range missiles, which means Ukrainian forces may fire American-made missiles inside Russian territory for the first time. The move, which comes weeks before Biden leaves office and hours after massive Russian missile and drone attacks, has angered the Kremlin, which accused Washington of "throwing oil on the fire". Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the decision would mean Washington's direct involvement in the conflict, echoing a similar sentiment expressed by President Vladimir Putin in September. The White House and President-elect Donald Trump have not commented yet, but Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, said: "The military industrial complex seems to want to make sure they get World War III going before my father has a chance to create peace and save lives." The elder Trump, who takes office on January 20, repeatedly pledged during his campaign to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war.

Russia says it intercepted more than 150 Ukrainian drones in 'massive' raid
Russia says it has stopped a "massive" Ukrainian air attack by downing at least 158 drones in 15 regions, including two over Russia's capital Moscow. The Russian defence ministry on Sunday said 46 of the drones were shot over the Kursk region, where Ukraine has sent its forces in recent weeks in the largest incursion on Russian soil since World War II. A further 34 drones were shot down over the Bryansk region, 28 over the Voronezh region, and 14 over the Belgorod region – all of which border Ukraine, the ministry said, adding that a total of 15 Russian regions were hit. Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Sunday said falling debris from one of the two drones shot down over the city caused a fire at an oil refinery. Also in Russia, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said nine people were wounded in Ukrainian aerial missile attacks in the Russian border region.
